I havn't dealt with speakers before other than listening to them. I am in process of swapping doors between two S13s. Unfortunately, sets have two different wiring setups..
Here is setup #1
the door harness connects to the white plug shown above. Those wires lead to that board I'm holding, which then has another set of wires going to the speakers, and tweeters (rockford fosgate).
Here is setup #2
The two wires I'm holding in this pic are branched from the door harness. the two wires go directly into the speaker's +/-. they are Polk speakers.
According to an 89 FSM, neither are OEM. The door harness should have two branches coming out for the speakers, both with connectors. The actual wires that goto the speakers are a brown one, and a brown with white stripes. Setup #2 has these two wires going to the speakers, however it is not comming off of the same branch shown in the FSM. Setup #1 seems to be completely different. double u tee eff?
Tell me what you want to do with the speaker setup and I'll tell you the best thing to do.
Do you want to eliminate front speakers completely? Do you just want to run a headunit and speakers? Do you want an amp to power your speakers? Tweeters?
I guess I was really unclear on what I was doing.
I am swapping doors from my current black ones (#1) to the red ones (#2). The red ones are cleaner with no dings. I just want speakers that work, nothing fancy.. it will be mostly a weekend track car.
What is keeping me from just simply using the entire door harness and speakers from setup #2 (red door) is the door harness is cut at where it goes through the rubber grommet near the hinge of the door.
What is keeping me from using the entire speaker setup from setup #1 with door #2 is the fact that there is so much hardware that i have no desire to have. That board I'm holding in the pic was literally just sitting there unmounted. Additionally, there is a little plastic box (I am unsure of what it is) that that the tweeters are connected to, and were literally just sitting there as well. The speakers themselves were mounted on the interior door panel and just looked stupid because they didn't fit where the OEM location should be. And BTW... Is that board an OEM piece, or is it aftermarket setup?
I was thinking about just modifying the harness from #1 to match #2's so i can use the more simple #2 speaker setup. I'm also up for the idea of no speakers up front at all, and just having rear speakers mounted.
I recommend throwing out both setups since they look like they were ghetto rigged.
For your setup all you would need is a headunit and 2 front speakers. Simple.
You can get MDF speaker mounts on ebay for cheap. It will let you mount 6.5" speakers in the front. You'll need to check the wiring at the headunit to make sure it's wired correctly.
Then run the 4 front speaker wires directly to the speakers. 2 on each side.
ok, so start fresh. Fair enough.
What the hell is that board thing in the first pic anyways?
They look like the amp for the tweeters.
I agree with Kenn, if you just want the two fronts to have some tunes, you would be better off getting brand new Speakers as they will probably sound better as they havent been ghetto rigged and you can get a decent pait of speakers for cheap, and at Bestbuy you can get the warranty and crank em up all you want and they will repace em when you blow em or wire em up wrong lol! win win!
If you're in NoVA I can take a quick look at your radio harness for you.
^ I am in NoVA, but not for much longer. I appreciate your offer. I'm just going to DL the FSM to follow the diagrams. Its pretty straight forward.
Yes it's very easy. 2 power wires, ground, and speaker. You can figure it out.
