Full Version: Welded Diff Whining?

So this has always been on my mind for a while now but I never thought anything of it. Is anyone else welded diff loud from inside the car? Like a "hummmm/supercharger" sound while driving. I also have solid subframe collars if that's assisting to the sound and make it louder. I have gear oil in it so yea....just checking to see if it may be time to weld up another one I have laying around.
I have welded probably nearly 100 diffs, and none of them whine when we install them. Very often, when people weld them, they damage the bearings, making noise occur much sooner than it normally would. I'd say its time for a fresh diff.
I figured the bearings might be shot or something. I got a fresh open diff laying around, I may just take the spider gear out (I'm not differential literate so that's what I'm guess its called), take it to someone and get that welded up then re-install.

I think the main reason mine is worn is from when I sprayed the hell out of it with brake cleaner before and after installation then putting the gear oil in....go figure. I been hiking everywhere on this thing lol. MD>NY>PA>MD (9/10hrs driving)...Drift Water (8hrs of drifting/driving)....etc it goes on.
how man ymiles did you put on it? we got my friends diff welded and after we put it back into the housing and on the car, it whined for a bit but it went away
lets put it this way...Ive had it since....late 07 lol so bout 2yrs now. I actually dont recall when it started making noise because I always thought it was my wheel bearings. Actually since about last year now that I think about it.
